Men's Basketball Takes 92-89 Overtime Victory Against Cortland

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Justin Ringen scored a career-high 38 points, including two free-throws to send the game into extra time, and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Knights to a 92-89 overtime victory over visiting Cortland, Tuesday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.

Junior guard John Decker added 19 points, 10 of which came in overtime, and seven assists while sophomore guard Kevin Crockett had 10 points off the bench in the win. Senior guard Blair Estarfaa led the way for the Red Dragons with 23 points.

"We put ourselves in a hole by not playing very composed throughout the game, but at the end of regulation and in overtime, I thought we executed the plays we wanted and were able to get some shots that we were looking for," said head coach Steve Minton. "Justin had an amazing game, even when we moved him into the post because Cortland was doing a good job denying him on the perimeter in the second half."

At 14:13 in the first half, sophomore guard Jack Eisenberg made a shot from long range to give Geneseo an early 12-4 lead. Ahead by 14, 26-12, with 8:02 on the clock, Cortland went on a 14-4 run to come within four, 30-26, at 1:44.

Following two free-throws by Ringen, first-year guard Justin Cooper made a three to cut the Red Dragon's deficit to three, 32-29, with 50 seconds remaining. However, Eisenberg sank a jumper from the left corner as time expired to give the Knights a 34-29 advatage at halftime.

Tied at 36 at 17:40 in the second half, Cortland went on a 13-4 run to take a nine-point lead, 49-40, at 12:07. With 7:37 on the clock, junior guard Jonathan Cohen scored from beyond the arc to pull Geneseo within one, 53-52.

The Red Dragons (11-4, 5-3 SUNYAC) responded with a 14-4 spurt to hold an 11-point lead, 67-56, at 3:32. The run was capped by a three-pointer from senior guard JP Reagan, who finished the night with 10 points off the bench for the visitors.

With 1:11 remaining in regulation, Ringen put back a missed free-throw to make it a 70-66 game. The teams traded free-throws over the next half minute as Cortland held a three-point edge, 74-71, after two free-throws by Crockett at 00:20.

Decker stole the ensuing inbound pass and laid it in to cut the deficit to one, 74-73. After Red Dragons' senior guard TJ Hefele made only one of two free throws, Ringen was fouled in the Knights' next possession with five seconds on the clock and sank both from the charity stripe to send the game into overtime.

Following a three by Decker to tie the game at 84, Crockett scored a jumper at 1:04 in overtime to give the hosts an 86-84 lead as Geneseo went 6-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch to secure the victory.

The Knights (12-4, 6-3 SUNYAC) return to action this Friday, Jan. 29, at Brockport for a game set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
