Men's Basketball Upends Buffalo State, 79-72

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior guard Justin Ringen totaled 20 points while sophomore point guard Charlie Zaepfel added 14 points and six assists to lead the Knights to a 79-72 victory at Buffalo State, Saturday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

The Knights (10-3, 4-2 SUNYAC) turned a five-point, 34-29, edge at halftime into a lead by as many as 17 in the second half on the way to their fourth-straight victory. Geneseo out-rebounded the Bengals (9-5, 3-4 SUNYAC), 45-31, led by a game-high 11 from sophomore forward Jordi Menkhorst

"Tonight topped off a good week for us," said head coach Steve Minton. "Road wins in the SUNYAC are hard to come by and we had to play very well to get three wins this week. Today, I didn't think we stretched Buffalo State's defense enough in the first half but we were able to do a better job in the second half and got some good looks."

Ringen scored all 20 of his points in the second half after only playing six minutes of the first half due to a pair of early fouls. It was junior guard John Decker carrying the load off the bench in the first half, leading the way with 14 points on his way to 16 for the game.

Geneseo trailed, 10-4, at 16:41 of the first half, but back-to-back three-point field goals by Decker capped an 11-4 run that gave the Knights a 21-14 lead it would maintain the rest of the game.

Buffalo State (9-4, 3-4 SUNYAC) pulled within three points, 37-34, with 18:11 on the second-half clock, but Ringen connected from long range on three of the Knights' next four possessions to give the visitors a 46-38 lead at 16:14. Another Ringen triple put Geneseo back on top by double-digits, 53-42, at 13:48,

The Bengals closed to within nine, 61-52, with 10:18 left in regulation, but the Knights responded with an 8-0 run capped by a Ringen jumper at 7:43 to take its largest lead of the game en route to the victory.

Geneseo looks to extend its four-game winning streak on Tuesday (Jan. 19), hosting Cortland at 7:30 p.m.
