Men's Soccer Defeats Hiram, 1-0

Box Score

ERIE, Pa. – SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Mike Skrzypczyk scored two minutes into the second half to lead the Knights to a 1-0 victory over Hiram, Saturday afternoon, on the first day of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by PSU-Behrend. Geneseo will face the host Lions in the championship game scheduled for tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.

"We played well today but were a bit slow and didn't have much of a rhythm offensively to start the game," said head coach Dominic Oliveri. "Our bench changed the game for us towards the end of the first half and from that moment on we dictated play. Conditions will certainly be a factor tomorrow and it's our second game in as many days against another strong opponent so we'll have to use a majority of our bench again and do everything we can to come away with the win."

Both squads struggled to get on the scoreboard in the first half as the Knights entered the break with a 5-2 advantage in shots.

In the 47th minute, Skrzypczyk took a pass from junior midfielder Alex Clar, who had controlled the ball at the top of the penalty area, and one-touched a shot into the left corner of the net for his first score of the year.

Geneseo (2-0) outshot the Terriers (0-1-1) 12-5 as senior keeper Logan Calvey finished the day with four saves to preserve his second-straight shutout.

Following the tournament title match tomorrow against host PSU-Behrend, the Knights are set to play at Clarkson next Friday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m.
