Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Gordon Lyons scored 21 points and added 17 rebounds while senior guard Andy Drescher totaled 19 points to lead the Knights to a 76-62 victory at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's basketball, Friday night.
Senior forward James McKenna chipped in 11 points while junior guard Kevin Zabransky was credited with a career-high 10 points for Geneseo (11-8, 7-5 SUNYAC).
"Gordon played an amazing game from start to finish. It was a huge win since we had already lost to them last week and the split might be a big factor at the end of the regular season," said head coach Steve Minton. "We made some adjustment from the first time we saw them, especially on the defensive end, and also took much better care of the ball. Our bench was instrumental as well."
A Lyons lay-up with 15:27 on the clock put the Knights on top, 14-6. Brockport scored the next five points, but a Drescher three-pointer kicked off a 10-2 run as the visitors led, 24-13, at 12:20.
The Knights' lead grew to 15, 35-20, on back-to-back lay-ups by senior guard Connor Rogers and Drescher with 7:58 to play, but the Golden Eagles responded with an 11-2 spurt to make it a six-point deficit, 37-31, at 1:46. One last jumper by Drescher staked Geneseo to a 39-31 halftime lead.
Geneseo controlled the second half, including 12 points and nine boards by Lyons. Geneseo built its largest lead of the game, 52-38, after a pair of Drescher free throws at 14:28, and held a double-digit lead until the 8:39 mark.
Brockport pulled within five, 58-53, with 7:03 left in regulation, but the Knights squashed the comeback bid with a 13-4 run to lead 71-57 with 1:21 remaining en route to the 14-point victory.
Following a trip to Buffalo State on Tuesday (Feb. 10) for a 5:30 tip-off, Geneseo kicks off a three-game conference home stand against New Paltz on Friday (Feb. 13) at 5:30 p.m.
