Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Gordon Lyons totaled 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for his 21st double-double of the season to lead the Knights to a 70-59 victory at Potsdam in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's basketball, Friday night.
Senior guard Andy Drescher had 15 points and five rebounds while senior forward James McKenna added 14 points and four assists in the win.
"Our defense triggerd things for us throughout the game tonight and in the second half we were very effective getting the ball out in transition for some easy buckets," said head coach Steve Minton. "We were able to run off of Potsdam's missed shots as well as some of their turnovers."
Tied at six at 17:16, Geneseo went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-6 lead with 16:11 on the clock. The run was capped by a three-point play from McKenna.
At the 9:51 mark, the Knights jumped out to another six-point lead, 20-14, after a lay-up from sophomore guard Jack Eisenberg. The Bears hit a lay-up to come within two, 25-23, at 3:25, but Geneseo responded by going on an 8-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the half, 33-23, at 1:40. Lyons scored five points in the run as the team took a 35-27 advantage into the break.
With 16:05 remaining in the game, Lyons converted a three-point play to make it, 43-37, and to spark a 17-2 run as the Knights held a 60-39 lead at 9:18. The run was capped by a three-point play from senior forward Devon Anderson.
Potsdam (2-21, 1-16 SUNYAC) cut the lead to 14, 64-50, with 5:35 on the clock after two-straight buckets by first-year guard Tishsean Emmanuel but that's as close as the Bears came until the final seconds of the game. Geneseo shot .531 percent from the field, including .438 from long range, to secure the road win.
The Knights (15-9, 11-6 SUNYAC) play their final game of the regular season tomorrow at Plattsburgh at 2 p.m. The first round of the conference tournament is slated to begin next Tuesday night with the semifinal and final taking place at the number one overall seed next Friday and Saturday, respectively.
