PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior Sara Rosenzweig captured the individual crown to lead the women's cross country team to its fifth-straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship, Saturday, hosted by Plattsburgh.
Geneseo out-distanced the field by compiling 26 points as Oneonta (58), Cortland (71), Fredonia (102) and Plattsburgh (109) rounded out the top-five finishers. The title was the Knights' 15th in the last 16 years.
"The women started off the day running extremely well and I could not be more proud of them, said head coach Dan Moore. "Sara led the charge while Olivia was able to regain her composure and closed hard after taking a spill in the woods. The rest of the team packed it up to bring home the team title. Today's SUNYAC team title was a combined effort, form our first runner through the 14th and they all worked so hard for this."
Rosenzweig covered the six-kilometer course in 21:48.6, besting the field by over 10 seconds. First-year Olivia Ryan finished third (22:04.3) followed by senior Jacquie Huben in fifth (22:11.6) and senior Ashton Hughes in seventh (22:14.0).
First-year Elise Ramirez finished the course in 10th place (22:25.3) followed by sophomore Kristen Homeyer in 11th (22:26.8) and senior Winny Chen in 13th (22:30.8).
Geneseo now has 15 total SUNYAC Championships in the 32-year history of the race, trailing Cortland by one.
"The rest of the cross country team, as well as track and field athletes, made the trip to support their teammates. With numbers exceeding 30 deep, their cheers were deafening and it was one of the best support crews I have seen. I am very excited to host the regional championship in two weeks and to see the team showcase all their hard work and dedication against the rest of the Atlantic Region," added Moore.
The Knights will next run in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals in two weeks (Nov. 14) hosted by Geneseo at Letchworth State Park.
