Men's Basketball Falls Short, 71-68, Versus Brockport

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward James McKenna scored a game-high 19 points while senior forward Gordon Lyons added 16 points and 11 rebounds, but it was visiting Brockport holding on for the 71-68 victory, Friday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's basketball.

Trailing, 69-59, with :39 seconds left in regulation, the Knights (9-8, 5-5 SUNYAC) scored nine unanswered points, including five points by McKenna, but a pair of free throws by Golden Eagle guard Aaron White with :03 on the clock sealed the win.

Brockport (9-8, 6-4 SUNYAC) was led by junior forward Patrick Modzelewski's 16 points, while White chipped in 13, including the deciding free throws.

"We had too many turnovers and that was the biggest factor for us tonight," said head coach Steve Minton. "We showed a lot of fight in the last minute to almost pull it out, but giving up that many points in the second half is unacceptable."

Brockport jumped out to a 12-6 lead at 15:20, but a 20-2 Geneseo run capped by a three-pointer by sophomore guard Connor Rogers staked the Knights to a 12-point edge, 26-14, with 4:49 on the first-half clock that was 11, 34-23, at halftime.

Brockport turned up the pressure in the second half, out-scoring the Knights, 48-34, while turning 12 Geneseo turnovers into 17 points.

Trailing, 36-24, at 18:34, the Golden Eagles pulled within two, 41-39, by the 14:34 mark after a 15-5 spurt. Geneseo scored five-unanswered but saw its 46-39 edge at 13:48 evaporate following a 20-5 that put the visitor up 59-51 with 6:24 remaining in regulation.

Brockport seemed to be in control with an 11-point lead, 68-57, with 1:37 left in the game, but the Knights battled back with an 11-1 run, finished off by a McKenna lay-up, to make it a one-point game, 69-68, with :04 seconds on the clock. Following a Geneseo timeout, White grabbed the ensuing in-bounds pass and was immediatley fouled, but sank both shots from the free-throw line to put the game out of reach.

Geneseo will play its next three games on the road, staring with a trip to Oswego on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off with the Lakers.
