Box Score 2 ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the RIT Inviational, Friday. The Knights defeated Medaille, 3-2 (25-20, 10-25, 31-29, 26-28, 20-18) before dropping their first match of the 2014 season, 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-10) to No. 17 Clarkson.
"While I thought we were a little flat in both of our matches tonight, I was pleased with how hard we fought to get the victory over Medaille," said head coach Jen Salmon. "Emma (Lannon) especially stepped up and played very well both defensively and offensively. Our confidence is still strong and our positive team mentality is as tangible as ever."
GENESEO 3, MEDAILLE 2 (25-20, 10-25, 31-29, 26-28, 20-18)
Sophomore outside hitter Tricia Baxley and junior outside hitter Lizzy Morton each totaled 12 kills to lead five Knights with double-figure kills as Geneseo outlasted Medaille in five sets.
Sophomore middle blocker Courtney Cleary, junior middle blocker Paige Pendleton and sophomore right side hitter Emma Lannon all were credited with 11 kills to lead the Geneseo attack, which compiled a .454 team hitting percentage for the match.
Junior setter Bethany VanDerMeid compiled 27 assists while sophomore setter Sarah Pray added 14 assists to direct the offense. Sophomore libero Dani Sayler finished the match with 10 digs as the Knights won their seventh-straight match to open the 2014 campaign.
NO. 17 CLARKSON 3, GENESEO 0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-10)
Geneseo lost its first match of the season in the nightcap, falling to Clarkson in straight sets. Baxley finished with six kills, while Morton added five kills as the Knights were held to a season-low .118 team hitting percentage.
Geneseo finishes out the tournament on Saturday, taking on St. John Fisher at 1:30 p.m.
