Men's Basketball Takes Down St. John Fisher, 63-55

Box Score

HENRIETTA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior guard Andy Drescher scored a game-high 25 points, while senior forward Gordon Lyons totaled 18 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth-straight double-double to lead the Knights past St. John Fisher, 63-55, Friday night, in the semifinals of the 49th-annual Wendy's College Classic, hosted by RIT.

The Knights (3-2) advance to the tournament championship game on Saturday night where they will face Roberts Wesleyan at 8:00 p.m. at RIT.

"Tonight, I thought we played a solid game from start to finish," said head coach Steve Minton. "St. John Fisher made some halftime adjustments that allowed them to make a run on us in the second half, but our guys responded well. We mixed up our defenses which seemed to work well. James (McKenna) had a great start and we went to him often, while Andy had a fantastic second half and was the difference in the last five minutes."

Trailing, 9-4, in the early going, Geneseo used a 14-4 run started and finished by three-pointers from senior forward James McKenna, to forge a 18-11 edge with 14:12 on the clock. The Cardinals (2-2) pulled back within five, 22-17, at 6:55, but back-to-back Drescher three-pointers helped push the Knights' lead up to 12, 30-18, at 2:18 that was nine points at halftime, 32-23.

St. John Fisher scored the first seven points of the second half close within two, 32-30, at 18:51, and the lead would change hands six times over the next 13 minutes before Geneseo was able to pull away. Back-to-back three pointers by first-year guard Kevin Crockett and Drescher gave the Knights a 52-48 lead with 5:10 left in regulation that it would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Clinging to a slim 52-50 edge with 3:59 on the clock, two-straight lay-ups by Lyons made it a six-point game, 56-50, at 2:19. Lyons hit two free throw attempts, while Drescher converted five-of-six trips to the line down the stretch to help put the game out of reach.

McKenna scored all 10 of his points in the first half, while finishing the evening with seven rebounds.

Geneseo will be making its ninth appearance in the tournament championship and first since falling in the 2006 final, 80-53 to Rochester. The Knights will also be in the hunt for their fifth tournament title and first since defeating Rochester, 65-61, in 2000.

Geneseo has faced Roberts Wesleyan 15 times throughout the history of the tournament, compiling an 8-7 record opposite the Red Hawks. Saturday will mark the first time the two teams have met in the championship game.
