ROCHESTER, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior Cassie Goodman finished fourth to lead the Knights to second place out of 40 teams at the NCAA Divison III Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Rochester at Genesee Valley Park, Saturday.
The finish automatically qualifies Geneseo for its 16th-consecutive NCAA Division III Championship appearance.
Despite being the only team to place six runners in the top-20, St. Lawrence edged the Knights by one point, 50-51, to win the title. Oneonta (120), Cortland (189) and Ithaca (210) rounded out the top-five team scores. The top-two teams earn automatic berths in the NCAA Championship race, while the other finishers will be considered for at-large berths distributed throughout the nation's eight total regions.
Goodman covered the 6-kilometer course with a time of 21:36.0, 31 seconds behind individual champion Amy Regan (21:05.8) from Stevens Institute.
Geneseo junior Ashton Hughes placed sixth (21:43.4) followed by sophomore Marissa Bellusci (21:57.4) in ninth. Junior Jacquie Huben crossed the finish line 15th (22:13.1) while first-year Kristen Homeyer in 17th (22:21.6) to complete the Knights' top-five runners.
Senior Alyssa Knott (22:27.4) ended up 19th, while senior Joanna Castrogivanni (22:37.2) was 27th.
St. Lawrence had the second, third, seventh and eighth-place finishers, but its fifth runner didn't cross until 30th.
Geneseo, which entered the weekend ranked fifth in the latest USTFCCA national poll and second in the Atlantic Region (behind St. Lawrence) will be in action next Saturday at the NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by Wilmington at the Golf Center at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio. The women's race is slated for a 12:15 p.m. start.
