Softball Splits Doubleheader At Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team traveled to Fredonia on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader, and came away with a split following a complete-game shutout from Gabriella Petroski in game two. The Knights move to 7-4 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Ray Schumacher kicked off the doubleheader in the top of the first inning with a two-run blast following a lead-off single by Brooke Fraas. However, the Blue Devils answered back in the bottom half with a double and a triple resulting in two runs to tie the game.
  • Both defenses tightened up for the next three innings, but Fredonia was able to take the lead going down the stretch after scoring in the fifth inning.
  • Down to the final three outs for the Knights, Lauren Babich pinch-hit to lead off the top of the seventh and picked up a single. Following a sacrifice bunt and a line-out, Schumacher stepped up to the plate and delivered a clutch single through the left side to tie the game. Unfortunately, Fredonia was able to secure the game-winning run off a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh.
  • The second game began with a pitching and defensive battle, highlighted by Petroski striking out three batters in the bottom of the second. Petroski followed up the dominant pitching performance by leading off the top of the third inning with a home run.
  • Jane Reilly and Fraas followed up the home run by Petroski with a pair of singles, which set up a two-RBI single from Emily Sylvanus to make it 3-0. The Knights offense wasn't done yet in the third inning, with Lauren Babich delivering the final RBI hit of the third to make it a 4-0 lead.
  • Petroski and the Knights defense shut out Fredonia for the remainder of the game, only allowing two more hits to secure the 4-0 win.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Petroski threw all seven innings for the Knights in game two, only allowing four hits and striking out eight to improve to 3-1 on the rubber this season. Nevaeh Ross and Mikayla Bucci combined to throw all seven in the first game, only allowing three earned runs.
  • Schumacher tallied three RBIs on the day on three hits, while Babich went 3-4 at the plate between the two games. Babich leads the team on the season in RBIs with 11, while Schumacher has 10.
