GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team picked up a four-set win in its Empire 8 home opener on Friday, topping Keuka 3-1 at Carl Schrader Gymnasium to improve to 9-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Geneseo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set on back-to-back aces from McKenna Callari and a pair of kills from Dyllan Thomas. Keuka pulled within 11-8 midway through, but Callari returned to the service line and put together another three-point run, capped by an ace, to make it 15-8. The set was settled by a 9-0 Geneseo finish from 16-13 to 25-13. Cory Elder put down back-to-back kills and combined with Kate Barba on a block during the stretch, while Gianna Lucchi and Callari each added kills before Barba's kill made it 24-13.
- Keuka took the second set 25-19, building a 10-4 lead on a six-point run and holding Geneseo at arm's length after the Knights closed to 14-13.
- Geneseo and Keuka traded points early in the third before Geneseo took control with a 9-0 run, from 9-8 to 18-8. Barba served the entire stretch, finishing it with an ace, and Sophie Hunter recorded three kills. Elder accounted for three straight stuffs at the net, two of them solo-assisted with Hunter and Lucchi, to turn the set. Brooke Borkowski added an ace late, and Callari's ace made it 24-14 before Geneseo closed it out 25-16.
- Geneseo opened the fourth set with a 5-0 run behind Barba's serving, which included an ace, and a kill from Elder, and led 9-3 early. After Keuka cut the lead to 12-8, Geneseo answered with a 4-0 run, from 15-10 to 18-10, behind kills from Barba and Hunter. Elder put down back-to-back kills late and Keuka's serving error closed out the match 25-16.
