Softball Falls In Empire 8 Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team saw its season come to an end on Friday morning, falling to St. John Fisher in their second game of the Empire 8 Tournament. The Knights conclude their 2025 season with a final record of 28-12, their most wins since the 2022 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Kaitlyn Schmitz and Ray Schumacher picked up back-to-back singles in the first inning to put two runners on, but Geneseo was unable to capitalize. In the bottom of the second inning, the Cardinals were able to put two runners on of their own, but Schmitz and the Knights defense worked their way out of the jam.
  • With the score still tied at 0-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, St. John Fisher was able to break through the defensive battle and take a commanding 10-0 lead.
  • Geneseo continued to fight and try to make a comeback in the top of the fifth, with Gabriella Petroski and Bella Nadzan picking up a single and a double to get the rally started. Brooke Fraas picked up an RBI single to score Claire Kubiak, who pinch ran for Petroski, then Schmitz added a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, the rally ended there for the Knights and they fell 10-2.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Schmitz recorded her 10th double of the season during the game, which marked the 46th of her career, setting a new program record for the Knights. The Eden, NY native caps off an incredible career for Geneseo, third all-time in hits with 191, tied for second all-time in RBIs with 108, and top-10 all-time in career batting average.
  • Tara Brochu and Molly Griffin turned in impressive performances at the plate for the 2025 season, with Brochu finishing at a batting average of .500, tied for second-best all-time in a single season, while Griffin hit .490 for her freshman campaign, tied for fifth-best.
  • Geneseo reached 28 wins for the fourth-time under head coach Dave Sylvester: 2015 - 28, 2018 - 32, and 2022 - 34.
