ELMIRA, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team capped off regular season action on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep at Elmira. The pair of wins moves the Knights win streak to seven games, and they head to the postseason with a 28-10 overall record and 17-5 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Geneseo opened the scoring in game one with a two-out RBI single from Molly Griffin, but the Soaring Eagles responded in the bottom half of the first and took a 2-1 advantage. However, in the top of the second inning Brooke Fraas drilled a two-run home run to regain the lead for Geneseo.
- The Knights tacked on three more runs in the third inning with RBIs from Tara Brochu, Gabriella Smith, and Gabriella Petroski. Geneseo went on to break the game open with a five-run fourth inning, and then two more runs in the fifth inning to help secure the 13-2 victory.
- Game two of the doubleheader saw the Knights score in the opening inning once again, this time with Kaitlyn Schmitz scoring off an error. Neither offense could break through in the following three innings as Geneseo held onto its slim 1-0 lead, but in the top of the fifth inning Hannah Olejniczak and Emily Sylvanus recorded an RBI double and an RBI triple, respectively, to expand the lead to 3-0.
- In the sixth inning, Smith and Bella Nadzan picked up two more RBIs to make it 5-0 for the Knights, while Schmitz and the Knights defense completed the shutout victory in the bottom of the seventh.
QUICK FACTS:
- Griffin went 5-6 at the plate over the two games to lead the offensive effort, while Smith posted a team-high four RBIs.
- Schmitz threw a complete game shutout in game two for her ninth win of the season, while Petroski pitched all five innings of game to earn her 14th victory this season.
- Geneseo will advance to the postseason tournament and has secured the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, depending on the results of the final games.Â
