Softball Sweeps SUNY Poly

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team picked up a pair of Empire 8 wins on Sunday afternoon, defeating SUNY Poly 2-1 and 11-1. The Knights improve to 18-6 overall and 8-2 in the conference with the wins, while the Wildcats dip to 10-7 and 4-2 in the Empire 8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo came out on top in a defensive battle for the opening game of the doubleheader. Tara Brochu broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning by smoking a double to the right field wall, scoring Lauren Bieniek.
  • The Wildcats got one back in the fifth inning, but Kaitlyn Schmitz and the Knights defense worked their way out of a jam and left a runner stranded. Then Gabriella Smith knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Claire Kubiak on a single to right centerfield.
  • The bats came alive for the Knights in game two, with Kaitlyn Schmitz drilling a two home run to open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Ray Schumacher then brought in Brooke Fraas in the second inning with an RBI single.
  • Leading 3-1 going to the bottom of the fourth, Geneseo put up eight runs to take command of the game at 11-1. Molly Griffin, Sierra VanDerwarker, and Nadzan highlighted the inning with a two RBI double and a pair two RBI singles, respectively, while Sierra VanDerwarker and Fraas each added RBIs as well.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Brochu highlighted the offense in game one by going 2-3 with an RBI, while Fraas, Schmitz, Schumacher, and Griffin each tallied two hits and a total of six RBIs in game two.
  • Schmitz picked up her seventh win of the season by throwing all seven innings in game one, allowing six hits and no earned runs.
  • Gabriella Petroski only allowed two hits over the five innings in game two while striking out four for her seventh win of the year.
