SUNY Geneseo Earns Six Weekly Honors from Empire 8 and UCHC

GENESEO, N.Y. - The Empire 8 and UCHC announced their weekly honors on Monday afternoon, and SUNY Geneseo had five student-athletes take home honors. Brynn Mooney and Jacob Miller brought home Women's and Men's Track Athlete of the Week Honors, Mackenzie Reigle was named Women's Basketball Player of the Week, Trevor Hofer earned Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, Sean Melso was named the Empire 8 Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Week, and Nicholas Kovacs rounded out the honors as the UCHC Rookie of the Week.

Mooney broke the Empire 8 record in the 400-meter dash and was part of Geneseo's 4 x 400-meter relay team that also shattered a league record at the David Hemery Invitational, hosted by Boston University over the weekend. She recorded a time of 55.32 seconds in the 400-meters and the 4 x 400-meter relay team of Mooney, Jill Ambler, Ava Bagley, and Janelle Eckl finished in 3:49.20. The 4 x 400-meter relay team now has the fourth best time in all of Division III to date this season, while Mooney is ranked fourth nationally in the 400-meters.

Miller had a stellar showing for the Knights at the Boston University Valentine Invite this past weekend. Miller ran a time of 48.02 in the 400 meters, good enough for second fastest in program history and top-15 in Division III so far this season. Miller went on to run the anchor in the 4x400-meter relay and put up a 46.83 split which gave the Knights a time of 3:13.75, second fastest in program history and fifth in Division III this season. It is Miller's third E8 weekly accolade of the season.

Melso scored a goal, added two assists and was plus-5 in No. 4 SUNY Geneseo's 7-3 win over No. 2 Utica on Saturday night. He assisted on Geneseo's first and seventh goals of the evening and scored 6:18 into the second period to give the Knights a 5-0 lead.

Reigle led Geneseo to a 2-0 week after averaging 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game, and breaking the program record for assists in a single season with 187, a record that stood since the 1998-99 season. In a 58-50 victory at Houghton, Reigle scored a season-high 22 points, and posted nine assists with six rebounds. Against Alfred she dropped 18 points, nine boards rebounds and six assists. On her second assist of the game against the Saxons, Reigle recorded her 187th career assist, breaking the program record set by P.J. McTigue in the 1998-99 season. She currently leads all of Division III in assists and assists per game.

Hofer averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 boards, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steal per game this weekend for the Knights, scoring 15 against Houghton and going for 11 points and five boards against Alfred. He drained five shots from beyond the arc and shot 83 percent from the foul line.

Kovacs helped lead Geneseo to a 7-3 victory over Utica on Saturday, posting one goal and one assist in the win. Kovacs and the Knights now control their own destiny for playoff positioning, as they can earn the regular season title and the No. 1 seed with two regulation wins this weekend over Nazareth.
