EMPIRE 8 CHAMPIONS!! Men's Soccer Wins First Conference Title Since 2006 On Thody's Overtime Winner

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's soccer team won the program's first Empire 8 title, and first conference championship since 2006, with a 2-1 victory over Brockport on Saturday afternoon. Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Dylan Thody scored the equalizer off a corner kick, then early in the first overtime he knocked in the game-winning penalty kick goal following a foul drawn by Aidan Lodie in the box. Geneseo will enter the NCAA Tournament with a record of 13-5-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first half proved to be a battle, with both teams putting pressure on the net. Max Crothall came up big for the Knights in the 15th minute, making a diving save from a Brockport free kick. Despite Geneseo's eight shots in the first half, the team went into halftime tied 0-0.
  • Brockport took the lead 15 minutes into the second, sneaking one past Geneseo. However, the Knights responded by putting the pressure on the Golden Eagles and taking control for the remainder of the game.
  • In the 76th minute, Geneseo secured the corner kick, with Michael Ruggiero taking it for the Knights. He sent a beautiful ball to the middle of the box, finding the head of Dylan Thody to tie the game 1-1. Geneseo held strong through the remaining minutes and headed into overtime against the Golden Eagles.
  • With everything on the line, the Knights pressed forward. Eric Famularo collected a rogue ball, sending it a wide-open Aidan Lodie in Brockport's zone. Lodie carried it in but was tripped up in the box, and the Knights were awarded a penalty kick just 30 seconds into overtime. Dylan Thody lined up to take the shot, nailing the PK and leading the Knights to their first conference championship win since 2006.

QUICK FACTS:

  • Dylan Thody led the team, scoring the Knights two goals to win the game, and was named the Tournament MVP. He leads the team with 15 goals and a total of 39 points this season.
