GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team secured a 6-0 victory over St. John Fisher in the Empire 8 semifinal game on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights win was powered by a record-setting performance from
Ella Greico, who set new single-season program records in goals and points, with 25 and 60, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Knights wasted no time taking a lead in the game, as Aubree Wenner scored off a rebound from a shot by Ella Greico just over one and a half minutes into the action. Greico then tied both program records with a goal of her own later in the period off of a penalty stroke.
- Sam Lewis extended Geneseo's lead to 3-0 in the second quarter, before Greico scored her record-breaking goal, collecting a ball played in front of the net by Lewis and sneaking it past the goalkeeper. Wenner continued the offensive frenzy in the second quarter, scoring her second of the game to make it 5-0.
- Greico capped off her incredible performance by scoring her third goal of the game just after halftime. The juniors goal marked the end of the scoring for the game as the Geneseo defense held strong down the stretch to secure the shutout semifinal win.
QUICK FACTS:
- Greico broke both records held by Kayla DeAngelis, which has remained at the top of the record books since the 2013 season. The New Hartford, NY native now has 63 points on the season and 26 goals.
