GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's soccer team advanced to the Empire 8 semifinals after a 1-0 win over Hartwick on Saturday afternoon. The Knights now hold an 12-5-2 record and 9-1-1 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Knights opened the game with a lot of energy, but had to face three corners from Hartwick early in the half. Michael Ruggiero had a great opportunity to take the lead with a free kick but missed just right of the goal. It was followed by a great shot from Charlie Sorensen, who was denied by the Hawks goalie, sending Geneseo off at halftime tied 0-0.
- The team came out hot to open the second half, with three shots in the opening minutes before Owen Burke found the back of the net to take the lead. Ruggiero took a free kick for the Knights, and forced the Hartwick goalkeeper to make a tough play on the far post, and when they couldn't catch the shot cleanly, Burke was there to clean it up and put the Knights ahead.
- The Knights played a man down in the final 13 minutes of the game, but it did not deter them. Burke nearly tallied a second goal in the 84th minute, but his shot went just right of the goal. They controlled the ball through the final minutes, securing the win against Hartwick, 1-0.
