Men's Hockey Opens Season With Shootout Win Over Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, PA: The SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team opened the season against Wilkes on Saturday evening, and came away with a shootout victory after tying 2-2 through regulation and overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Knights fought hard in the first period, putting 13 shots on the Wilkes goaltender but were unable to find the back of the net.  Jack McDonald had two great opportunities early on but was unsuccessful. 
  • Alex Dameski took control in the second, scoring back-to-back goals for the Knights. Filip Wiberg intercepted a pass from the Colonels in their zone, finding Dameski, who went top shelf for his first goal of the game. He followed it with another just 20 seconds later off a breakaway to extend their lead.  
  • Wilkes tied the game with two goals late in the third, sending the Knights into overtime. Geneseo pushed hard though the five-minute overtime but was unable to score, forcing the game into a shootout.  
  • Alex Dameski beat the goaltender for the Knights first shot, followed by two misses from Cameron Ricotta and Sean Melso. Jacob Torgner made two big saves before Wilkes was able to get one past him. Luke Panchisin sealed the deal with a beautiful five hole shot to give the Knights the shootout win.  

QUICK FACTS: 

  • Alex Dameski led the team with two goals this evening, putting him at 40 career goals.
  • Jacob Torgner made his season debut in goal, making 34 saves for a .944 SV%. 
  • Geneseo was dominant on face offs, winning 46 to 28 against Wilkes, with Ryan Forberg leading the team with 13.  

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Knights will have their first home game of the season on Tuesday, November 4th against Fredonia at 7 PM.
