Geneseo, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the 2024 SUNY Geneseo Sports Hall of Fame class. The group will be honored at the annual Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony, slated for Saturday, October 26, 2024. Registration and ticketing information for the ceremony will be released in the fall.
The 2024 Hall of Fame class includes a slate of three student-athlete alumni and two staff members. Highlighting the class is longtime men's soccer coach and emeriti Director of Athletics, Michael Mooney. Joining Mooney is women's basketball star Kendra Vavrina Waite '03, All-American High Jumper and women's basketball player Amanda Haney Blette '08, women's basketball All-American Melissa Graham Kuberka '13 and former women's basketball coach Scott Hemer.
In addition, the ceremony will highlight the 2011 SUNYAC Champion women's basketball team.
A native of Buffalo, New York and graduate of the University of Buffalo, Mooney spent 26 years on the sidelines for the Geneseo men's soccer team, compiling a record of 262-186-47 as the all-time winningest coach in program history. Selected as the SUNYAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year on four occasions (1989, 1997, 2004, 2006), Mooney led the Knights to a pair of SUNYAC titles (2004, 2006), advancing to the NCAA Division III Final Four in 2004. Mooney mentored three All-Americans and Knight players accounted for 110 All-SUNYAC certificates during his tenure. In addition to men's soccer coach, Mooney wore multiple hats in his time at Geneseo, including Residence Hall Director, Intramural and Recreation Director, Tennis Coach, Assistant and Associate Director of Athletics and finally, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. In 11 years as the leader of the Department, Geneseo captured six of the nine possible SUNYAC Commissioner's Cups and finished in the top 20 of the Division III Learfield Director's Cup five times, including a program-best 11
th in 2018. Mooney capped his career with the 2019 Under Armour Division III Athletic Director of the Year award and the 2023 SUNYAC Patrick R. Damore Distinguished Service Award.
Geneseo compiled a record of 67-40 and qualified for two ECAC Division III Upstate tournaments in Waite's tenure, winning the title in 2003 with wins over Cazenovia, Utica and Rensselaer. A native of Pittsford, New York and graduate of Sutherland High School, she was a two-time All-SUNYAC selection, including first team recognition in 2003. At the time of her graduation, Waite held the school record with 123 free throws made in a season (currently third all-time), was second in career blocks (92/7th), third in career free throws made (269/5th), third in career rebounds (665/8th), fifth in career field goal percentage (49.6%/5th) and tenth in career scoring with 1,057 points (currently 15
th). She graduated in the top 10 and remains in the top 15 all-time in several other career, season and game statistical categories.
A two-sport student-athlete and five-time NCAA Division III high jump All-American, Blette was a four-year member of the women's basketball, indoor and outdoor track and field teams. The Unadilla, New York native and Sidney High School graduate was a five-time SUNYAC team champion and earned All-American all four years in outdoor and indoor in 2008 (5
th). Outdoor, she was third nationally in 2005, sixth in 2006, runner-up in 2007 and placed fourth in 2008. She owns the fourth best indoor mark (1.67m) in school history and the second-best outdoor height (1.73m). In basketball, she paced Geneseo to a 54-52 record, playing in all 106 games with 40 starts. She finished her career with 841 points (17
th at graduation and 23
rd currently), 506 rebounds (14
th/22
nd) and 74 blocks (4
th/9
th). She capped her Knight career by being named the 2008 Louise Kuhl Award winner as the College's top female athlete.
A consummate student-athlete, Kuberka excelled for four years on the basketball court, in the classroom and as a student leader. The Orchard Park product and graduate of Mount Mercy High School led the Knights to a record of 78-32 during her four seasons, including a 26-4 mark and the SUNYAC Championship in 2011. A multi-dimensional player, Kuberka graduated in the top 15 all-time at Geneseo in points (1,042/12
th), rebounds (733/3
rd), assists (295/9
th), steals (156/14
th) and blocks (115/1
st). A decade later, her statistical highlights remain ranked fourth (blocks), sixth (rebounds), 10
th (assists), 15
th (steals) and 16
th (points). In addition, she was third on the career free throw percentage chart and sixth on the career three-point field goal percentage list. A two-time All-SUNYAC selection, Kuberka earned honorable mention All-America, first team All-ECAC, first team All-SUNYAC and SUNYAC Player of the Year honors in 2013. Off the court, Kuberka was a four-time SUNYAC Commissioner's List honoree, co-chaired the College's Student Athletic Advisory Committee, served as a Resident Assistant and GOLD Leadership Peer Mentor and capped her college career with the 2013 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and Geneseo Athletics' Fred Bright Contribution and Leadership Award.
A native of North Collins, New York and 1995 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Hemer spent 11 seasons on the bench at Geneseo, transforming the women's basketball program into one of the best in the nation. The Knights posted a record of 218-89 during his tenure, including three SUNYAC Championships (2011, 2015, 2018), seven SUNYAC finals appearances and five NCAA Division III tournament bids, including reaching the round of 16 in both 2015 and 2017. Hemer claimed five SUNYAC Coach of the Year awards (2011, '15-18), was the WBCA East Region Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2016 and collected the WBCA Division III National Coach of the Year award in 2016. He mentored five WBCA All-America selections and 25 All-SUNYAC awards, including two SUNYAC Rookies and three SUNYAC Players of the Year. Despite all his professional accolades and championship accomplishments, Hemer will be most remembered for his leadership during 2016 and 2017, when the women's basketball program lost two players in separate tragedies in back-to-back seasons. Current head coach and then assistant
Alyssa Polosky credits Hemer for "guiding the team through their grief and sadness, while continuing to give perspective on life and basketball". Geneseo women's basketball received the SUNYAC Award of Valor in 2016 and the WBCA We R Team Award in both 2016 and 2017.
Lastly, the ceremony will celebrate the accomplishments of the 2011 SUNYAC Women's Basketball champions, who posted a record of 26-4 and the program's first conference title since 1996 with wins over Brockport, Cortland and Oneonta in the conference tournament. The season included a first-round win over DeSales in the NCAA Division III tournament.
