Softball Comes Up Short In SUNYAC Tournament

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team was unable to defend their three-straight SUNYAC titles on Thursday afternoon at New Paltz, falling to Oneonta (5-1) and New Paltz (5-0). The Knights finish the year with a 21-19 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights offense struggled to find timely hitting in both games, but scored their lone run of the day in the sixth inning against Oneonta. Ray Schumacher drew a walk, then Audrey Minton singled to advance Schumacher to second, setting up an RBI double by Tara Brochu.
  • Geneseo had great opportunities to score in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the third against the Red Dragons, recording three hits and two walks between the two innings, but were unable to bring any runs across home.
  • Against the Hawks, Tori Guary led off the game with a single and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from Rebecca Schwartz, but Geneseo couldn't bring Guary around to home.
  • New Paltz was able to break the scoreless tie in the third inning, and then extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Geneseo continued to threaten to score, including loading the bases in the top of the fifth, but couldn't get a comeback rally going and ultimately fell 5-0.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Audrey Minton highlighted the Knights offense, going 4-6 at the plate on the day with two doubles.
  • Kaitlyn Schmitz threw five innings against Oneonta, only allowing three earned runs. While Petroski came on in relief with two scoreless innings.
  • The Knights left a total of 17 runners on base between the two games.
