GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's lacrosse team traveled to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons in the SUNYAC Tournament title game and fell 14-7 on Saturday afternoon. The Knights finished the season with a 14-4 record after reaching the program's third-straight SUNYAC championship game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Cortland got on the board first less than two minutes into the game, but Geneseo's Emily Salanger quickly notched a goal to tie the game at one off of a free-position shot. Sophie Lyko added to the Knights' total just two minutes later off an assist from Molly Brown to take a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back goals by the Red Dragons in the final five minutes of the first period sent them to the second up 3-2.
- The Knights tied the game again to start the second quarter as Natalie Long found the back of the net off an assist from Maddie Brown. Cortland quickly retook the lead less than two minutes later, before extending their lead to two halfway through the period. Another score by Cortland gave them a 6-3 lead just before the half.
- A score by the Red Dragons less than 30 seconds into the second half put them up by four, but only for one minute as another goal by Long on a free-position shot lessened Geneseo's deficit. Two straight goals by Cortland gave them a five-goal lead until Mo. Brown found the back of the net with five minutes left in the quarter. Another three goals from the Red Dragons put them up 12-5 by the end of the third quarter.
- One minute into the final period, Rachel Dickinson added a goal to bring the Knights' back within six goals, but two more scores by the Red Dragons in the middle of the final quarter extended their lead to eight. One final goal by Maira Brennan wasn't enough for the Knights as they fell in the SUNYAC title game 14-7.
