Women's Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Day With 9-6 Win Over New Paltz, Reina Nets 100th Career Goal

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's lacrosse team hosted New Paltz while celebrating Senior Day and came away with a 9-6 victory over the Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Alaina Reina recorded her 100th career goal in the win as the Knights now sit at 12-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play on the season, which secured the No. 2 overall seed and a first round bye in the SUNYAC tournament.

?HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo struck quickly in the first quarter, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of play. Maddie Brown found the back of the net to open the game off an assist from Alaina Reina. Reina went on to score back-to-back unassisted goals within the next four minutes, including the 100th of her career, to put the Knights up 3-0. Geneseo's defense held strong and they took their three-goal advantage into the second period.
  • The second quarter started out much like the first with the Knights scoring two goals in the first four minutes. Rachel Dickinson struck first with an unassisted score and Megan Cook followed up soon after off an assist from Ma. Brown. Back-to-back goals from New Paltz lessened their deficit to three, but another goal from Dickinson before the half sent Geneseo to the break up 6-2.
  • Scoring slowed in the third quarter as both defenses stepped up, but the Hawks were able to score two while Ma. Brown found the back of the net for Geneseo. The Knights looked to hold their three-goal advantage throughout the final period of play.
  • The fourth quarter began with the Hawks scoring early, but Emily Salanger added another goal for the Knights with the help of Cook and a man up advantage. Molly Brown added Geneseo's final goal with just minutes left to play, and despite a last-minute goal from New Paltz, the Knights held on and came away with a 9-6 conference win.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Reina, Dickinson, Mo. Brown, Ma. Brown tied for the team-lead with three points each.
  • Sarah Ginnane led the squad in ground balls with five, while herself, Tricia Curran, and Caitlyn Korzeniewski recorded a team-best three caused turnovers against the Hawks.
  • Goaltender Emily DeJohn played all 60 minutes against New Paltz and recorded six saves in the win.
