Women's Basketball Falls In SUNYAC Title Game To New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team took on the New Paltz Hawks in the SUNYAC Championship game on Saturday afternoon. The Knights fought hard, but fell 52-47 after going 19-8 overall and 12-6 in conference play this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights struggled to get going in the first quarter allowing nine unanswered points to start the . Senior forward Kerry Dennin scored Geneseo's first points before senior guard Kiley Snow hit a three-pointer to lessen the deficit even further. New Paltz held a 21-7 lead after the first frame.
  • An eleven-point run allowed the Knights to get back in striking distance in the second quarter as they did not allow the Hawks to score for over eight minutes before halftime. A late jumper from junior guard Mackenzie Reigle sent the game to the break with the Knights trailing by eight.
  • Out of the break, Geneseo's strong defensive effort continued as they kept New Paltz scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter. Back-to-back layups from Reigle along with free throws from Dennin brought the Knights' to within one point of tying the game midway through the period. A solid run by the Hawks in the final minutes sent them to the fourth quarter with a 39-32 lead. 
  • The fourth quarter opened with another three-pointer from Snow, but the Knights' offense was unable to score again until the final two minutes of the game. Layups from Dennin and Reigle along with a late three from Snow was not enough to overcome consistent free throws from New Paltz as Geneseo fell 52-47 in the SUNYAC Championship game. 
QUICK FACTS:
  • Dennin led the Knights in scoring with 17 points, while Reigle and Snow followed with 14 points each.
  • Dennin also led the team in rebounds with 10, while Reigle had a team-high seven assists against the Hawks.
  • Reigle and Dennin were named to the All-Tournament team for the Knights.
