GENESEO, NY - The No. 18 SUNY Geneseo field hockey team won the Empire 8 Championship this afternoon over Hartwick 4-0 in their inaugural season in the conference. The Knights win improves their overall record to 18-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

• Geneseo scored their first goal of the game at the end of the first quarter with just three seconds remaining. Ella Greico found the back of the net after a scramble with the goalie and Katrina Clare was awarded the assist.  

• In the second, Sam Lewis drew a penalty in the arc and was awarded a penalty stroke. Shannon Cunningham took the shot for the Knights and blew it past the goalie to extend the lead to 2-0.

• Ada Roe scored another for Geneseo at the halfway point of the second quarter off a pass from Sam Lewis and Geneseo went into halftime up 3-0 over the Hawks. 

• Sam Lewis secured the title over Hartwick after making a great move on a defender and hooked the ball past the goalie. The Knights defense remained strong in the fourth quarter and secured their first ever Empire 8 Conference title.  

QUICK FACTS: 

• Lilly Spitz recorded her 16th win of the season and 10th shutout this season. Sam Lewis was named the Tournament MVP for the Knights.

• Geneseo outshot Hartwick 26-6, and recorded eight penalty corners to just two from the Hawks

• This is Geneseo's fourth conference title in the team's history.
