Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 Against Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY- The SUNY Geneseo Men's Soccer Team fell to Nazareth University, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights dropped to (6-3-2) overall and (4-1-2) in Empire 8 Conference play.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Senior midfielder Stefen Nikolic fired a shot from outside the box in the 10th minute, denied by the goalkeeper.  

  • First-year midfielder Alfonso Vito danced around the Nazareth defender and used his left foot to float the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute of play. 

  • Vito had two more scoring opportunities shortly after his goal. The first-year midfielder was denied on a breakaway attempt and also sailed the ball over the net on another scoring chance minutes later.  

  • Nazareth tied the game in the 52nd minute and scored in the 75th minute to take a late lead.   

  • Senior captain Joe Vogt got his head on the ball in the 85th minute and redirected it at the goal but was caught by the keeper.  

QUICK FACTS:  

  • Alfonso Vito scored his first collegiate goal during the match after previously tallying two shots on goal through twelve games. 

  • The Knights outshot the Golden Flyers 9-4 each half, 18-8 overall.  

  • The last time these teams clashed was in 2019, which ended in a 2-2 draw after two overtimes.  

WHAT'S NEXT:  

Geneseo (6-3-4) will host Alfred University (5-6-2) on Sunday, October 20th, at 1 p.m. in an Empire 8 matchup.
