ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team earned its first win of the season on Friday evening as they beat St. John Fisher in five sets, 10-25, 29-27, 25-18, 12-25, 15-13. The Knights took on another five-set match afterwards, but fell to Heidelberg 28-26, 23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Against the Cardinals, Geneseo struggled to find its rhythm early on and dropped the opening set 25-10, but a five-point run in the second set with Madison Popielski at the service line flipped the momentum in the Knights favor. With the set tied at 27-27, a big block from Julia Wallace and Madison Gamberg gave Geneseo the final push they needed.
- Trailing 13-10 in the third set, Popielski stepped up to serve once again and this time put the Knights on a nine-point run to make it a 19-13 advantage. A kill from Wallace secured the 25-18 victory.
- In the fifth and final set, the Knights started hot with a 4-0 lead, but found themselves trailing 11-10 later in the set. A kill from Gamberg, an ace from Popielski, and a kill from Sommer Madigan at match point ended up proving to be enough for Geneseo to take the victory, 15-13.
- Against Heidelberg, the Knights dropped a tight first set 28-26, but bounced back in the second set with a 25-23 victory. Alisiana Muscoreil picked up a big kill at 23-23 and then Zooey Gagnier dropped an ace to give Geneseo set point.
- The Knights cruised to a 25-18 win in the third set, but ultimately fell to Heidelberg in five sets to split their matches on the day.
