Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's tennis team faced St. John Fisher in its home opener on Friday afternoon, and the Knights pulled out a 7-2 victory.
Geneseo opened the match by sweeping the doubles action, highlighted by a 8-0 victory at first doubles by
Alex Galle and
Natalie Pipes. At second doubles,
Rory Tobin and
Samantha Rava teamed up for a 8-2 win, while
Abigail Rockwood and
Katie Kujawa teamed up at third doubles to complete the sweep with a score of 8-3.
In singles action, Pipes cruised to a first set 6-0 win, but then pulled out a 7-6 tiebreak victory in the second set to secure the point for the Knights. Tobin and Rava were impressive at second and third singles, respectively, only dropping one game between the two matches. Rockwood secured the final point for the Knights with a 6-0 6-1 victory at fourth singles. Kujawa and
Talia Wutz competed at fifth and sixth singles and fell by scores of 7-5 6-0 and 6-3 6-2, respectively.
"Our team displayed so many qualities, it is difficult to pick any single one and say that quality was dominant," said head coach
Alan Heverly. "I saw new skills, courage playing hurt, and not giving up. This team makes me more proud of them in every match we play!"
Geneseo will return to the court on September 13 against Fredonia at home.
