Field Hockey Earns 2-0 Victory Over RPI In Home Opener

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team opened up its season with a big 2-0 victory over RPI at College Stadium on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a relatively quiet first period, Geneseo earned a penalty stroke as time expired in the first quarter to try and take a 1-0 lead. However, RPI was able to make the stop and keep the score knotted at 1-0.
  • Early in the second quarter, Sam Lewis broke the tie for the Knights, finding the back of the goal off a pass from freshman Ava Schillaci. The Knights earned two more penalty strokes in the quarter, but couldn't convert and the lead remained at 1-0 heading to the second half.
  • Schillaci continued to create scoring opportunities for Geneseo, and found the stick of fellow freshman Sara O'Donnell in the third quarter to make it a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Knights defense continued to stifle the Engineers, not allowing any shots on goal in the game to secure the 2-0 victory.

QUICK FACTS
  • Lewis recorded the 10th goal of her career after tallying nine in her rookie campaign, while O'Donnell tallied her first career goal in her first game as a Knight.
  • Sarah Quinlan played all 60 minutes in goal for Geneseo to earn the shutout.
  • The Knights outshot RPI 19-2 in the game, and have now evened the record against RPI all-time at 3-3.

WHAT'S NEXT
Geneseo returns to College Stadium tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Denison.
