Women's Volleyball Fall In SUNYAC Semi-Finals

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team fell to New Paltz in their semifinal matchup in the SUNYAC Tournament. The team's season concluded in a 3-0 sweep, 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 at the hands of the Hawks. The Knights went 13-13 overall and 7-2 in conference play this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set started off close with Geneseo taking an 11-9 lead before the Hawks went on three and five point runs to widen the margin. The Knights attempted a comeback late in the frame as seniors outside hitter Madison Popielski, middle blocker Alisiana Muscoreil, and opposite hitter Julia Wallace tallied consecutive kills. The Hawks were able to finish out the set, winning 25-18.
  • The second set started out much like the first with both teams knotted up at eleven points each. The Knights spread the ball around as six different players recorded kills as they attempted to claw back into the match. The team was unable to gain any headway, however, as New Paltz took the set 25-18, once again.
  • Looking to notch a tally in the win column, the Knights went up 5-3 to begin the third set. The Hawks then went on multi-point runs towards the middle of the frame to go up 8-5, 14-9 and 21-12. Multiple kills by sophomore opposite hitter Sommer Madigan brought Geneseo back within striking distance, but the Hawks were able to close out the set and match with a 25-17 victory.

QUICK FACTS
  • Popielski led the Knights with six kills in the match.
  • Sophomore setter Carolyn Mack led the team in assists with nine, followed closely behind by junior setter/opposite hitter Jenna Garvey who recorded six.
  • Libero Cecilia Dignan led the squad in service aces with two, as well as in digs with 10.
