Women's Soccer Heartbreaking Loss at SUNYAC Semi-Finals

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's soccer team traveled in the semifinal round of the SUNYAC playoffs and fell to the Golden Eagles in a penalty shootout on Wednesday night. After double OT, game was knotted at two goals each before Brockport won 6-5 in penalties.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Eagles found the back of the net on their second shot of the day at just over five minutes into the opening period.
  • Although they were unable to tie it up, Geneseo's offense came out firing in the first half as they recorded 11 shots and four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of action.
  • Just over two minutes after halftime, Brockport tallied their second goal of the match. 
  • The Knights answered promptly as forward Lindsay Wright lessened the team's deficit to one in the 50th minute. 
  • Geneseo's offensive attack remained in control as they tallied eleven more shots and three corner kicks in the second half.
  • More than 20 minutes later, senior back Ashleigh Scheidweiler took a pass from junior midfielder Lindsey Matthews and notched the game at two.
  • Both teams combined for five shots in the final ten minutes of regulation, but couldn't take advantage as the game went into overtime tied 2-2. 
  • The first ten minute overtime period saw the Knights tally four shots and three corner kicks while keeping Brockport largely away from the net.
  • After neither team could breakthrough in the first overtime period, the game went into 2OT where Geneseo notched six shots, but none got passed Brockport's goalie as the match went into a penalty shootout.
  • After making their first four shots, the Knights missed their sixth shootout attempt before the Golden Eagles made theirs and walked away with the victory.  
  • Junior goalkeeper Mollie Collins played all first 110 minutes in net and tallied five saves in the matchup.
QUICK FACTS
  • Along with Matthews (5) and Wright (3), Liv Raucci (7), Lindsey Clar (4), Haylee Evertson (3), Juliette Frischmann (3), and Abby Foster (2) each tallied multiple shots in the matchup. 
  • Raucci also led the squad with five shots on-goal in the matchup, as well. 
  • Collins' saves in the game brought her season total to 56.
  • The Knights finished the season with an overall record of 7-3-8 while going 2-1-6 in conference play and beating Plattsburgh in the first round of the SUNYAC playoffs.
