Women's Soccer Wins Second-Straight SUNYAC Championship

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo women's soccer team successfully defended its SUNYAC Championship title on Saturday afternoon as pulled a victory on penalty kicks, 1-1 (4-3), at Cortland.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights struck early in the contest, as senior forward Lindsay Wright connected off a corner kick from graduate midfielder Hannah Sullivan in the 14th minute.
  • The Red Dragons were able to bounce back from the early goal and find the equalizer in the 29th minute. Neither team was able to find the back of the net before halftime, and the game entered the second half in a 1-1 tie.
  • Geneseo withstood a flurry of offense from Cortland in the second half as they were out-shot 14-0. Senior goalkeeper Angel Bennett made four second half saves to send the game into overtime.
  • The Knights controlled the action in both overtime periods, recording four shots compared to two from the Red Dragons. However, neither team could break the tie and the game went to penalty kicks.
  • Bennett began the penalty kicks with a diving save to her left, and then Lindsey Matthews, Wright, and Dana Schoeps converted their attempts to hold a 3-2 advantage.
  • After a penalty attempt from the Knights bounced off the post, the score was knotted at 3-3 heading into the final two attempts. Bennett came up big for Geneseo once again with a diving save to her right, and then graduate midfielder Mackenzie Griffin sealed the victory with a goal in the upper left corner.
