GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo Field Hockey team battled back from another one-goal halftime deficit, but fell just short dropping an overtime loss to Cortland, 2-1, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship game on Saturday afternoon at College Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- The Red Dragons outshot the Knights, 2-1, in the first quarter as both teams battled for posession of the ball. Cortland finally took the lead in the second quarter, converting off of a penalty corner to make it 1-0.Â
- The Knights posessed the ball for most the second quarter but could not find the equalizer and went into the half trailing by a goal. First-year defender Hailey Roethel made a crucial defensive save just before halftime, parrying the ball away off the goal line to keep it at 1-0.
- In the third quarter, Geneseo pressured throughout the frame and earned a penalty stroke midway through the frame. Senior forward Maggie Phipps stepped up to the spot but her shot was knocked away by the Cortland goalkeeper.Â
- The Knights finally drew level in the fourth quarter when Darby Matthews netted her second goal of the SUNYAC Tournament off of a penalty corner, making it 1-1 with under 8:00 to play.Â
- Geneseo had several opportunities to drive home the game winning goal in the fourth quarter and overtime, but could not convert. Cortland scored on a counter-attack with 1:18 remaining as a rebound bounced off the post and in front of the cage for Cortland to put away to seal the victory.Â
