Women's Volleyball's Season Comes To An End At Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's volleyball team came up short in its quest for a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship on Friday afternoon as they fell to top-seeded Cortland in the semifinals in three sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights got off to a slow start in the opening frame, trailing 10-3. Junior middle blocker Alisiana Muscoreil helped Geneseo win four out of five points midway through the set with a kill and a block, but the Red Dragons stopped any thoughts of a comeback and went on to win 25-18.
  • Following a 25-12 defeat in the second set, the Knights came out hot in the third set with their backs against the wall. Geneseo recorded three blocks and an ace to take a 4-0 lead, and then kills from junior outside Linda Rossi and senior middle blocker Jackie Borland helped to hold the lead at 9-6.
  • The Knights continued to fight to force the match to a fifth-set, as they won four out of five points to tie the set at 17-17. However, Cortland was able to make the final run and take the final set 25-20 to end Geneseo's season and advance to the championship.

QUICK FACTS
  • Rossi led the Knights offensive attack, tallying 12 kills and a .320 hitting percentage.
  • Senior libero Emily Haber paced the defense with 11 digs, while sophomore setter Jenna Garvey tallied a team-high 14 assists.
  • The 12-12 finish for Geneseo marked their sixth-straight season with a record of .500 or better.
