Field Hockey Overcomes Halftime Deficit To Defeat New Paltz in SUNYAC Semifinal

Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Darby Matthews finished with a goal and an assist as the Knights overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat visiting New Paltz in comeback fashion, 4-2, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at College Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Knights and Hawks played through an even first quarter with both teams managing just one shot in the opening frame.
  • The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second quarter, converting a penalty corner with just over two minutes to play in the first half. 
  • In the third quarter, Geneseo evened the score when Matthews struck a shot past the keeper off a penalty corner, making it 1-1 with 9:34 to play in the frame. 
  • Senior forward Maggie Phipps gave the Knights the lead later in the third period, chipping home a rebound over the pads of the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. 
  • New Paltz tied the game in the fourth quarter, but the Knights regained the lead just 1:37 later. Phipps spun past a defender at midfield and sprung Ada Roe in transition with a through ball pass to the right flank. Roe fired a shot to the back post where sophomore forward Emma Fon tapped it home to give the Knights a 3-2 advantage with 5:09 to play. 
  • First-year midfielder Sam Lewis added an important insurance goal moments later to make it 4-2, and Sarah Quinlan and the Geneseo defense held on for the victory. 

QUICK FACTS 
  • The Knights advance to the SUNYAC Finals for just the fifth time in program history. Geneseo is 3-1 in its four previous trips with conference championships in 2010, 2016 and 2019. 
  • Phipps scored her team-high 11th goal of the season while Matthews scored her second goal of the season. 
  • Emma Fon added her fourth score of the season while Lewis netted her ninth. 
  • Sarah Quinlan made five saves to preserve the win in goal. 

WHAT'S NEXT? 
Geneseo (15-3) will advance to the SUNYAC Finals, and will host Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
