BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's soccer team had their season come to a close on Saturday afternoon in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals at Brockport, falling in penalty kicks. The Knights scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to force overtime, but after the game was forced to penalty kicks they fell 5-4 in the shootout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Golden Eagles scored first, connecting on a free kick goal from just outside the box in the 22nd minute. The Knights out shot Brockport 7-2 in the opening half, but it was the Golden Eagles who entered halftime with the one goal advantage.
- Brockport added to its lead in the 56th minute off a penalty kick, and were holding strong on defense to keep Geneseo off the scoreboard. Â
- In the 82nd minute, Tyler Lewandowski converted a penalty kick following a red card on the Golden Eagles and the Knights would put the pressure on to tie the game in the next eight minutes.Â
- Senior midfielder Justin Arilotta came through for Geneseo in the 86th minute with the game-tying goal, and the Knights had forced the quarterfinal matchup to head to overtime.
- Following a scoreless 20 minutes of overtime, the two teams headed to penalty kicks. Lewandowski and Arilotta both scored their attempts, as well as Luke Bloom and Joe Vogt, but Brockport was able to pull out the 5-4 victory in the shootout.
QUICK FACTS
- The game marked just the third time in program history Geneseo has had to go to penalty kicks in the SUNYAC tournament, with the other two coming in 2008 against Cortland and 2010 against Plattsburgh.Â
- Lewandowski's goal marked his 10th of the season, while Arilotta recorded his third goal.
- The Knights finished the season with a 9-6-3 overall record, their second-straight season with a winning record after going 10-7-2 last year.
