Matthew Doran sniped a power play goal in the first period that held up as the game winner, lifting the Knights to a 2-1 victory over host Nazareth on Saturday night at Bill Gray's Iceplex in Rochester.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior defenseman Alex Wilkins struck first for the Knights, putting Geneseo ahead 1-0 just 1:04 into the game. Dakota Zarudny and Justin Cmunt each earned assists on the play as the Knights pulled ahead in the early going.
- Late in the first period, Geneseo added to its lead with another goal. Senior defenseman Matthew Doran cashed in on a 5-on-3 opportunity with a one-timer off assists from Domenic Garozzo and Cooper Fensterstock giving the Knights a 2-0 lead with just over 1:30 to play in the period.
- In the second period, Nazareth cut the lead in half with a goal at the 17:18 mark, making it 2-1. The Knights outshot the Golden Flyers, 11-7 in the second period but still held just the one-goal lead.
- Matt Petizian made four clutch saves in the third period as the Knights held onto their slim lead. Geneseo killed off a pair of third-period penalties to stave off the Golden Flyers and earn the win.
QUICK FACTS
- Wilkins tallied his first goal of the season and just the fourth of his career while Doran netted his 14th career score.
- Zarudny and Fensterstock have each tallied an assist in each of the Knights' two games so far this season.
- Petizian finished with 15 saves for the victory in net, his second of the season, improving to 26-5-1 in goal for the Knights in his career.
