Field Hockey Tops RPI, 3-2, in Overtime

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Ada Roe scored the game-winning goal with 2:08 remaining in the first overtime period as the Knights defeated visiting Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at College Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Geneseo struck first as first-year forward Emma Fon finished off a set piece, firing a shot from the arc past the RPI keeper. Sophomore midfielder Darby Matthews earned the assist on the play as Geneseo took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter.
  • After RPI tied the game, the Knights applied pressure on the Engineers defense to earn a penalty stroke. Junior midfielder Cassidy Sturdevant stepped up and calmly buried the stroke to give Geneseo a 2-1 advantage with just under two minutes to play in the first frame.
  • The Engineers tied the game in the second quarter, tallying off of a penalty corner to knot it, 2-2.
  • The scored remained tied until the first overtime period. Sophomore defender Olivia Hernick cleared a ball up the field to junior attacker Maggie Phipps who beat a defender to create a breakaway opportunity. Phipps drew the goalie and slipped a pass across the face of the net to Roe, who finished it past the diving keeper for the victory.
