Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior setter Morgan Michalski ran a balanced attack and recorded a season-high 39 assists as the Knights came from behind to defeat Brockport, 3-2, in the two teams' State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener on Wednesday night at Schrader Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Geneseo jumped out to an early lead in the first set, pulling ahead, 9-7, but Brockport rallied to earn a 25-21 opening set win.
- Junior middle Jackie Borland, junior outside Isabella Imbo and sophomore outside Madison Popielski each registered three kills in the second set as the Knights earned a 25-15 to tie the match, 1-1.
- The Golden Eagles cruised to a 25-13 third set victory to take a 2-1 lead, but the Knights came storming back.
- Imbo tallied five kills in the fourth set while Borland earned four on just five swings. Sophomore outside Julia Wallace and first-year middle Madison Gamberg each registered three kills as the Knights earned a 25-23 fourth set win to force a fifth and deciding set.
- The Knights pulled ahead early in the fifth set, leading 9-6, but the Golden Eagles used a 5-1 run to take an 11-10 lead. After a Brockport error tied the match, Imbo recorded a kill to give the Knights a 13-12 lead. The Golden Eagles earned a side out, but a service error put Geneseo ahead, 14-13. Michalski served up an ace for the final point of the match to give the Knights the win.
QUICK FACTS
- Michalski finished with 39 assists, the most since Sept. 12, 2018 (44 vs. Rochester) in her career. She added 11 digs, four aces and a pair of kills.
- Imbo finished with 13 kills while Gamberg tallied 10 and Borland notched nine on a team-best .333 hitting percentage. Gamberg and sophomore outside Julia Wallace each recorded a team-high four blocks as the Knights combined for 14 total.
- Geneseo played in front of its home fans for the first time in 676 days. The Knights extended their regular season winning streak against conference opponents to 21 games, extending back to the 2017 season.
