Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener at St. John Fisher, 2-1

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Matt Volz tallied a late goal, but it wasn't enough as the Knights fell to host St. John Fisher, 2-1, in the season opener on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Geneseo conceded first as the Cardinals capitalized on a miscommunication in the Knights defense to take a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. 
  • The Knights' best chance of the first half came when first-year midfielder Stefan Nikolic created space and placed a shot on goal, put it was saved by the Cardinals' keeper. The rebound fell to the feet of junior forward Matt Volz, but his shot glanced off the crossbar and the Knights trailed at the half, 1-0.  
  • In the second half, St. John Fisher added to their tally in the 70th minute, extending the advantage to 2-0. 
  • With just over five minutes to play, senior back Sean Beaver knocked a cross from the right side through to Volz who finished the ball on the back post, cutting the lead in half, 2-1. Neither of the Knights' final two chances to tie the game came on frame as they fell in the season opener.

  • Volz scored his first collegiate goal in his Geneseo debut, one of six Knights to make their Geneseo debut on the evening. 
  • Beaver recorded career assist and first collegiate point. 
  • Junior goalkeeper Will Price finished with three saves.
