Women's Soccer Fends Off Fredonia to Advance to SUNYAC Championship

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's soccer team survived a second half scare from Fredonia in the State University of New York Athletic Conference semifinals and advanced to the championship game with a 3-2 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Knights wasted no time getting going as senior midfielder Mackenzie Griffin scored just two minutes into the action. Senior midfielder Hannah Sullivan took a corner kick that the Blue Devils attempted to clear, but Griffin was there to strike a ball perfectly over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net.
  • Just over 10 minutes later, it was Griffin igniting the offense again as she crossed the ball to sophomore forward Liv Raucci, who sent a perfect shot into the upper left corner to make it a 2-0 lead.
  • Geneseo added to their lead once more before halftime behind a great individual effort from Sullivan who made multiple moves past the Fredonia defense before sending a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
  • Although the Blue Devils faced a 3-0 deficit in the second half, they battled back to make it a one-goal game with just under eight minutes left to play. The Knights defense bunkered down for the final minutes of the game and were able to hold on for the playoff victory.

  • The Knights allowed more than one goal for the first time this season, and have allowed just seven goals on the season.
