Men's Ice Hockey Battles Cortland to a 2-2 Draw

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - The top-ranked SUNY Geneseo men's ice hockey team battled State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Cortland to a 2-2 draw on Friday night at Ira S. Wilson Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Knights had a few good looks to score and take an early lead in the first period of action, but some solid defense and goalkeeping from the Red Dragons kept the score knotted at 0-0 after 20 minutes of play.
  • The scoring action opened up for Geneseo after back-to-back penalties were committed by Cortland and gave the Knights a 5-on-3 advantage for just over a minute. The Knights only needed 25 seconds of the two-man advantage to find the back of the net as first-year forward Peter Morgan drilled home the first goal. Junior forward Justin Cmunt ripped a shot off the goalies pads and junior forward Tyson Gilmour was there for the rebound and quickly passed the puck across the net to Morgan who was waiting for the open shot.
  • The Red Dragons didn't back down after letting up the first goal and quickly bounced back with a goal of their own just over three minutes later. The two teams went to the locker rooms with a 1-1 tie following two periods of action.
  • The Knights took a lead for the second time in the game early in the third period as senior forward Ryan Burnett gathered the rebound off a shot from first-year forward Stefan Miklakos and took the puck around the back of the net before wrapping around for the goal.
  • Late in the third period Cortland capitalized off a penalty by Geneseo and evened the score at 2-2 with 2:51 left to play. The Red Dragons committed a penalty with 1:33 on the clock, but the Knights weren't able to score the game-winner.
  • The five-minute overtime period saw the Knights get a couple break-away looks, but nobody was able to convert and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

QUICK FACTS

  • First-year goalkeeper Adam Harris played all 65 minutes in net and tallied 26 saves.
  • The 2-2 score marked the seventh time the Knights and Red Dragons have played to a draw all-time, with Geneseo now holding a 68-21-7 advantage.
  • Cmunt now has double-digit points on the season with seven goals and three assists, while Morgan recorded his fourth goal and ninth point of the season. Burnett tallied his third goal of the season.
