Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team didn't get the result they were looking for in their home opener as they fell to Medaille, 55-54. The loss dropped the Knights to 3-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mavericks came out of the gates hot and jumped ahead on Geneseo early with a 15-3 advantage just over five minutes into the action. Sophomore guard Kelly McLaughlin cut the lead back down to single digits with a big three-point shot, but the Knights entered the second quarter trailing 24-15.
- Geneseo stepped up its defensive play in the second frame, holding Medaille to just nine points. The Knights cut the deficit to just seven points before half, thanks to four-straight free throws made by sophomore guard Kiley Snow and first-year guard Brooke Woodard.
- Despite the Mavericks extending their lead to 10 points following the third quarter, Geneseo got their comeback attempt going early in the fourth. A three-point shot from junior guard Hannah Stockman made the score 47-43, and one possession later a layup from first-year guard Mackenzie Reigle made it a one-possession game with 5:42 left to play.
- Unfortunately, the Knights were never able to take the lead in the fourth quarter, and their attempt at a game-winning shot as time expired was thwarted by solid defense from Medaille.
QUICK FACTS
- Regile led the Knights offensively with 12 points, while sophomore forward Kerry Dennin tallied a game-high 11 rebounds.
- Junior forward Lauren Romito tallied an impressive six blocks in the game, good enough to join a tie at third all-time in program history for blocks in a game.
- Geneseo had not dropped a home-opener since Nov. 27, 2007 against St. John Fisher.
