Top-Ranked Men's Ice Hockey Holds Off Plattsburgh For 3-2 Victory

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Justin Cmunt tallied two goals and senior forward Levi Wunder added a pair of assists as the top-ranked Knights earned a 3-2 victory over State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Plattsburgh on Friday night at Ira S. Wilson Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Geneseo struck first nearly eight minutes into the game. Senior forward Brendan Miller created a turnover in the Knights' attacking zone and slipped a pass to junior forward Tyson Gilmour who fired a shot on goal. The puck ricocheted off the pads and found Cmunt, who buried the rebound to put Geneseo ahead, 1-0.
  • Later in the first period, Cmunt struck again, this time on the power play. Senior forward Levi Wunder and junior defenseman Alex Wilkins earned assists as Cmunt crushed a slap shot from the right point to make it 2-0 with 8:48 to play in the first. Plattsburgh scored before the end of the frame to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • The two squads played through a scoreless second period but the Knights extended their lead back to two goals in the third period. Wunder intercepted a pass in the defensive zone and outskated a pair of Cardinals into the attacking zone and slid the puck to first-year forward Peter Morgan on the back post for a tap-in goal, making it 3-1.
  • Plattsburgh cut the lead to 3-2 with a power play goal with 6:52 remaining. The Cardinals had chances to equalize and pulled their goalie over the final 90 seconds, but the Knights held on for the victory.

QUICK FACTS

  • Cmunt leads the Knights and NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey with four power play goals and ranks second in the country with six goals on the season.
  • Junior goaltender Matt Petizian made six saves in goal over the first 19 minutes, but was removed after suffering an injury. First-year goaltender Adam Harris earned the victory with 20 saves in 41:06 of game action.
  • In a game that featured 19 penalties and 49 penalty minutes, Geneseo finished 1-for-8 on the power play while going 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
