Men's Ice Hockey Takes Down Cortland, 7-1, on Senior Night

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior forward Andrew Romano scored two goals and assisted another, as the Knights defeated State University of New York Athletic Conference rival Cortland 7-1 on senior night at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Romano got the scoring started early, lighting the lamp thirty seconds into the game. Senior forward Conlan Keenan and sophomore forward Brendan Miller assisted.
  • Less than two minutes later, junior forward Carson Kelley doubled the Knights' lead. Junior forward Dan Bosio and junior defenseman Kyle Hartman assisted.
  • First-year forward Tyson Gilmour scored his second career goal at the 6:31 mark. Assists were provided by junior forward Gordon Helmuth and senior defenseman Cam Russell.
  • Romano rounded out a four-goal period by scoring his second on the powerplay. The goal was scored at 12:29 and was assisted by Keenan and sophomore defenseman Matthew Doran.
  • Only one goal was tallied in the second period, which was scored by junior defenseman Kyle Hartman of Geneseo, his second of the season. His shot from the blue line just got passed Cortland's first-year goalie Luca Durante. Gilmour and first-year defenseman Alex Wilkins got the assists.
  • Geneseo scored twice in the third period. The first was a powerplay goal scored by senior forward Tyson Empey and assisted by Romano and Keenan. The second was scored at even strength by senior defenseman Teddy McCabe. He was set up by Bosio and junior forward Devin Brink.
  • Cortland struck late in the third to deny junior goalkeeper Aaron Mackay of his first career shutout.

QUICK FACTS

  • Romano extended his career long point streak to eleven games tonight after his goal in the first period. 
  • Thirteen Knights recorded a point while Keenan finished with a team-high three assists. 
  • Junior goalie Aaron Mackay made eighteen saves on nineteen shots for Geneseo.
  • The senior class was honored in a pre-game ceremony and combined for nine points on the night. As a class, they now sit at a combined 632 career points, three shy of tying the class of 1991 for most in program history.

Geneseo will visit SUNY Oswego tomorrow, Sunday, February 9. The game will start at 6:00 p.m. This game was originally scheduled for Friday, February 6 but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
