Women's Basketball Defeats Brockport, 66-52, in SUNYAC Quarterfinals

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior guard Lindsay Halpin was nearly perfect from the field, scoring 21 points on 7-for-9 shooting, as the Knights picked up a win over Brockport in the SUNYAC quarterfinals, 66-52.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The opening quarter was back and forth as neither team held a lead of more than three points. Halpin scored four points throughout the period to give the Knights an 11-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • On the opening possession of the second quarter junior guard Natalie Alfieri layed out for a loose ball, generating a turnover and Halpin converted a three pointer on the ensuing fast break.
  • Geneseo took off on an 18-1 run holding the Golden Eagles without a field goal until the 54-second mark.
  • Late in the quarter Halpin hit back-to-back three pointers, finishing the half with 13 points on 100% from the field as senior guard Sara Ciotti nailed a step back three pointer as time expired to give the Knights a 35-15 lead at half.
  • First year guard Hannah Stockman scored four points in the third while Alfieri added six as the Knights outscored the Golden Eagles 19-20, entering the final period of regulation up, 55-36.
  • Despite being outscored 16-11 in the fourth quarter, the Knights held onto their lead, securing a 52-66 victory and punching their ticket to the SUNYAC semifinals. 

QUICK FACTS

  • Geneseo held Brockport to just 5-for-25 (20.0%) shooting in the first half, allowing just 15 points. 
  • The Knights shot 55.1% from the field on the day, including 5-for-11 from beyond the arc.
  • Lindsay Halpin finished 7-for-9 on the day in her 21-point outing, just her second 20-point output of the year.

Geneseo will travel to New Paltz as they look to face the Cortland Red Dragons in the SUNYAC semifinals, Friday, Feb. 28, tip off is set for 5:30 PM.
