Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo sophomore outside hitter Maddie McLaughlin totaled eight kills and five digs while senior libero Sam Mendelsohn added a match-high 15 digs to lead the Knights to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-14) victory over Brockport in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams, Tuesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Geneseo trailed by three on four occasions during the opening set, including 15-12. However, a kill by senior outside hitter Abby May kicked off a 9-0 run on the serve of junior setter Mary Bartkus that pushed the Knights to a decisive 21-15 lead they would not relinquish.
- In the second, Geneseo turned a one-point lead into a 13-9 advantage following a 4-1 surge. Brockport pulled back within two, 14-12, but the Knights scored eight-straight points, including a pair of kills by senior outside hitter Grace Cergol, to build a 10-point lead that proved insurmountable.
- Geneseo (5-6, 1-0 SUNYAC) started the third with a 10-1 lead that grew to as many as 13 down the stretch to seal the victory.
MATCH NOTES
- Geneseo limited Brockport (4-9, 0-1 SUNYAC) to a -.061 attack percentage for the match.
- May finished the night with seven kills while Cergol and senior middle blocker Kat Vernon each ended with five.
- Bartkus totaled 16 assists while first-year setter Grace Thomas added 10.
- Geneseo hosted its second-annual "Dig Pink Match," raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research in conjunction with the SIDEOUT Foundation.
