Women's Volleyball Moves Past Oneonta, 3-2

ONEONTA, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior outside hitter Grace Cergol totaled 13 kills and 10 digs while senior outside hitter Abby May added 13 kills to lead the Knights to a 3-2 (25-21, 17-25, 28-25, 19-25, 15-6) victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's volleyball action, Friday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Oneonta scored four-consecutive points to take a 15-11 first-set edge. Geneseo closed within one, 18-17, but the Red Dragons scored three points for a 20-17 edge. The Knights scored a decisive 6-2 run to take a 23-19 en route to the first-set victory. 
  • Oneonta bounced back to take the second. The Red Dragons opened an 8-2 lead that grew to 16-9. The Knights pulled within four twice, including 20-16, but Oneonta scored five of the final six points to seal the win. 
  • Neither team led by more than three in a tight third set. Tied, 21-21, the Knights scored two points following a Red Dragon attack error and a May kill. Oneonta scored a 4-2 spurt to lead, 25-24 and led 26-25, but a kill by sophomore middle blocker Maddie McLaughlin followed by a Red Dragon hitting error led to a service ace by sophomore setter Morgan Michalski that secured the win. 
  • Oneonta (15-6, 3-3 SUNYAC) responded by taking a 14-6 lead to start the fourth set. Geneseo pulled back within two, 18-16, but the Red Dragons put together a 7-3 run to force a deciding fifth set. 
  • Geneseo jumped out to a 9-2 lead capped by three-consecutive Oneonta hitting errors. Leading 11-6, Geneseo scored the final five points to seal the victory. 

MATCH NOTES 

  • Geneseo (11-8, 6-0 SUNYAC) moved into sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC standing after Potsdam handed Cortland its first conference loss of the season in the night's other action. 
  • McLaughlin joined Cergol and May in double-digit kills, finishing the match with 12. 
  • Junior outside hitter Alexandra Frank compiled a team-high 15 digs, followed by senior libero Sam Mendelsohn with 14. 
  • Michalski scored 24 assists while first-year setter Grace Thomas added 14. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Geneseo heads to New Paltz on Saturday (Oct. 12) for a 1:00 p.m. match with the defending SUNYAC Champion Hawks. The Knights swept New Paltz, 3-0, during the regular season, but the Hawks returned the favor, 3-0, in the SUNYAC Championship game. Both matches were played at Geneseo.
