Women's Soccer Blanks Cortland, 1-0, For Second-Straight SUNYAC Title

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Domenica Piccoli scored the lone goal to lead the Knights to a 1-0 victory against visiting Cortland in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship, Saturday at College Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Cortland goalkeeper Danika Svedson held Geneseo scoreless in the first half with four saves as the Knights outshot the Red Dragons, 13-0, in the first half.
  • In the 61st minute, first-year midfielder Hannah Sullivan beat a defender down the left side and centered a pass to junior midfielder Sarah Loprieno right in front of goal. Loprieno fired a shot on goal that Piccoli deflected past the diving keeper to put the Knights ahead.
  • Senior defender Rachel Walsh led a Knights' backfield that held the Red Dragons without a shot for the length of the match as the Knights earned back-to-back conference championships.

  • Geneseo (14-3-1) outshot Cortland, 21-0, including a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal and finished with an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
  • Piccoli netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season, tying her single-season career high (8, 2017). 
  • Geneseo earned its second consecutive SUNYAC title while making its fifth SUNYAC Championship appearance in six seasons.
  • Senior midfielder Jennifer Moran was named SUNYAC Tournament MVP and also earned the SUNYAC Elite 20 award, given to the student-athlete participating in the championship with the highest cumulative GPA.
